Pupillage
We are a highly motivated and ambitious chambers, but also consider ourselves to be friendly and relatively informal. Members of Chambers span a wide age range and a number are in their second career, having come to the bar after working as academics, trade union officials, solicitors, journalists, consultants, and a variety of other professions.
There are over sixty members of Old Square Chambers including 10 Queen's Counsel, practising in the fields of employment and discrimination, professional discipline, personal injury, clinical negligence, product liability, environment, health and safety and public inquiries.
Pupillage is your training as a barrister. You will experience a wide variety of work in our different practice areas and have the opportunity to work closely with senior juniors and silks on complex and sometimes high profile cases.
Members of Chambers who are pupil supervisors take their responsibilities towards your tuition seriously. Pupils usually have four supervisors, changing every three months, in order to ensure that pupils see the breadth of work undertaken by members of Chambers. Pupils are not treated as second-class citizens in Chambers; you are regarded as its source of future talent.
We have a system of special interest groups in Chambers, which provides a vehicle for in-house discussions on new developments in the law, external training for others and marketing opportunities. Pupils are encouraged to become involved in the various groups and their activities. We also encourage you to carry out further training and will reimburse the cost of Bar Council courses.
Bristol
Our annex in Bristol was established in 1991. Currently 14 tenants are based in Bristol and many more spend much of their time there. You can choose whether to be based in London or Bristol during your pupillage. If you decide to be based in London, you are encouraged to spend a week in Bristol and arrangements can be made for a longer period of time to be spent there if you wish.
Second Six
In the second six you will undertake your own court and advisory work for which you will retain your fees. You will have a dedicated clerk to manage your court diary; we have a well-regarded clerking and administration team.
A pupillage at Old Square Chambers provides an excellent training in a well-established and highly regarded set, involvement in and experience of stimulating and interesting work, and the opportunity to develop professional and personal friendships which will stand you in good stead for your future at the Bar.
