Once again, Old Square Chambers have been commended by Chambers & Partners 2018 for our provision of quality client service at the Bar:

William Meade, a veteran of the set for nigh on 25 years and Old Square’s senior clerk for nearly ten years, presides over a clerks room which attracts a wealth of praise from instructing solicitors. One interviewee says: “They are some of the best clerks I have come across.” Another source adds that “the level of service is pretty phenomenal,” while other impressed commentators appreciate that the clerking team will “bend over backwards and help as much as possible.”

Meade himself is singled out for praise, with one interviewee describing him as an “outstanding head clerk.” The excellence of others in the set’s clerking team is demonstrated in commentary which refers to Nick Salt, the medical team co-ordinator, as someone who “always takes great care when asked to fit the right counsel for the case.” Paul Adams also receives praise for being “very helpful and very amenable.” In relation to billing, instructing solicitors are pleased that the set is “flexible and transparent with fees.” Finally, sources also draw attention to the benefits of the quality seminars run by members of Old Square.

The Legal 500 2017 also commends Chambers:

Old Square Chambers houses ‘true experts in employment law’, who are ‘quite simply brilliant’, but the set is also recommended for personal injury and clinical negligence work, and, in addition, has ‘built a reputation for high-quality advice and advocacy in the professional discipline space’. The barristers are ‘extremely approachable and down to earth’, as well as being ‘trend-setters and law-changers of the highest order, who provide a highly effective service’. The clerks do ‘a fantastic job’ too, ‘always going the extra mile’; ‘nothing is ever a problem’. Senior clerk William Meade in particular is ‘a star’, who ‘delivers an outstanding service and takes great care to ensure instructing solicitors are very well looked after’. His team includes team leaders Paul Adams, who is ‘very diligent, helpful and prompt in replying to all enquiries’, and Jack Wheeler. Consultant Nick Salt is also ‘a first-rate clerk’. Deputy senior clerk Graham Smith recently joined from Crown Office Chambers.

The clerking team at Old Square Chambers is widely praised by instructing solicitors for their “business-like and efficient approach” on the one hand, and their “friendly” manner on the other. Clients also highlight the high value for money that this set can offer, commenting that “they are well run and have many top qual­ity barristers whose rates compare favourably with barristers of similar experience and qual­ity elsewhere.” The set’s client service receives praise from top to bottom and, in the words of one commentator, Old Square Chambers is “a really reliable, professional outfit, from clerks to barristers. I’ve been impressed with the set; everyone I’ve dealt with I would recommend. The clerking is really good, very helpful and accommodating. They’re very friendly and re­ally good at managing diaries.”


Old Square Chambers aims to provide the highest possible standards of advocacy, advice and service. With this in mind, we provide this information in order to set out in clear terms our policies and practices as they relate directly to the service we provide for you. 


Review of new Instructions and Briefs: Counsel will review new briefs and instructions within 5 days of receipt (or sooner if marked urgent) to provide an initial response or to assess whether they are able to conduct the work by the date required. If the agreed deadline is not possible, a revised date will be negotiated or if there is no room for manoeuvre, the instructions will be reallocated to someone (with your approval), who is able to comply.

Paperwork: It is Chambers' policy that all written work should be completed within 28 days. This standard will be applied unless you agree to another deadline (shorter or longer) appropriate to your case. Any such agreement will be recorded on our computer system so that we can monitor progress against our commitment to you. Every attempt will be made to adhere to these arrangements but we will notify you as soon as possible in the unlikely event of our being unable to meet the deadline set. If a matter is required to be dealt with urgently, it would assist if you could contact us in advance and/or clearly mark the back sheet as 'urgent'.

Court Appearances: When you contact Chambers to book Counsel, we will advise you if the barrister of your choice has an existing commitment and establish your wishes as to the use of alternative counsel. Should you wish to double-book your preferred counsel, we will keep you informed as to likely availability as the court date approaches so that you may reassess your options. In the unusual circumstance that acceptable cover cannot be provided within Chambers, we will, if required, assist in finding other Chambers to assist you.

Briefs: It is vital to the smooth and effective handling of a case that we have sufficient time to prepare for court appearances. Many cases now require skeleton arguments to be lodged in advance of the hearing so it is therefore essential that instructions are sent giving ample time for preparation. For our part, we shall ensure that we arrive at court within plenty of time to allow time for discussion with yourself and your client.

Timescale factors: Wherever possible, we will endeavour to achieve the timescales outlined above, or any other reasonable timescales agreed at the time of accepting the instructions.

Timescales may vary depending on factors such as barristers’ availability, the complexity of your case, the need for additional documents and the other side’s approach.

Chambers will, wherever possible, endeavour to provide advice and representation that meets and exceeds the needs of our clients. Unforeseeable factors such as Tribunal/court delays, cases overrunning, barrister illness and other factors outside of our control could cause delays. We will always endeavour to work with you to ensure we  meet and exceed your expectations wherever possible. Where it is not possible, we will ensure we communicate clearly and regularly with you to guide you through any challenges.

Whilst all barristers and staff strive to maintain high standards of service, there might be occasions when a client is dissatisfied with the service provided by a barrister or Chambers staff.  In such situations we invite clients (professional or lay) to bring the matter to the attention of Chambers as soon as possible.  To that end we have a Complaints Procedure which is available to clients.  A hard copy of our Complaints Procedure can be provided upon request.  The Complaints Procedure sets out the detailed mechanics of the procedure.
