In the past John has undertaken a large volume of personal injury work covering a full range of topics with the area and was instrumental in building the personal injury group at Old Square. He was lead counsel for the Coalminers VWF test case litigation which resulted in the second largest group settlement in British legal history. His personal injury work now is focussed on test case and group litigation.

- AB & ors. v DTI t/a British Coal Corpn [2006] EWCA Civ 1357; LTL 19/10/2006 - Powers of supervising judge in group litigation compensation scheme (mineworkers' vibration white finger)
- Rice and Thompson v. Secretary of State for Trade and Injury [2007] 1 ICR 1469 (CA) - Proximity in tort; National Dock Labour Board liable to dockers for asbestos diseases though not employed by Board
- Baker v. Quantum Clothing Group [2009] EWCA Civ 499; LTL 22/5/2009; (2009) PIQR P19; Times, June 17, 2009 - Noise induced hearing loss: distinction between s.29 Factories Act 1961 and negligence.
The latter case is due to be heard in the Supreme Court in November 2010.
