Hannah Bennett wins compensation for IRA victim

Hannah Bennett successfully represented Mr Bull in his claims for unfair dismissal and disability discrimination against Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council.

Mr Bull was employed as a Customer Services Representative by Blaenau Gwent Borough Council from April 1985. He lost his sight whilst on military service and is registered blind. In July 2008, he was subject to comments and behaviour which he considered to be discriminatory and which Cardiff Employment Tribunal found to constitute harassment. He raised a grievance which the Tribunal concluded was not adequately investigated by the Council.

Mr. Bull suffered depression and, following the Council’s attempts to redeploy him, which were also criticised, he was made redundant in August 2010. Cardiff Employment Tribunal unanimously held that Mr. Bull had been unfairly dismissed, there had been a failure to make reasonable adjustments, he was the subject of direct disability discrimination and harassment and had been victimised.

At the recent remedies hearing, Mr. Bull was awarded over £200,000 by the Tribunal.
