Stephen Grime has vast experience of complex litigation particularly in personal injury and clinical negligence.  He has acted in a range of high value claims both for claimants and defendants.  He regularly advises upon technical insurance points.  He also undertakes cases involving negligent professionals particularly in the insurance and construction fields.

Recently he has been engaged in cases involving the scope of the ex turpi causa defence in road traffic claims (McCracken v Smith [2015] EWCA Civ 380) and the impact of European law upon claims by passenger victims Churchill Insurance v Fitzgerald [2012] EWCA Civ 1166; [2013] 1 W.L.R. 1776 & (C-442/10) European Court of Justice.

Having sat as a Recorder in the Technology & Construction Court and acted as arbitrator and mediator, he has a deep knowledge of ADR and achieves beneficial settlements in many  difficult cases.

Recent settlements have included a multi-million dollar fatal accident claim on behalf of the widow of a Canadian banker killed in an accident on Waterloo bridge and on behalf of a tetraplegic claimant injured in an accident in Denmark.  Amongst recent settlements in excess of £5m in value have been those of a young child run over by a bus, a Greek migrant rendered tetraplegic in his first week in the UK, and a motor-cyclist with catastrophic brain injury.


Stephen Grime has long experience of environmental litigation in dealing with compensation claims on behalf of individuals, corporates, local authorities, utilities and insurers.  In recent years this has included a class action against a local authority arising birth damage from particulate pollution during reclamation of a steel-works complex, claims for flooding by a group of householders against a local authority and a utility, potential claims against a local authority arising from wind generated by a tall building, claims by a highway authority against a developer arising from subsidence of a trunk road and a number of subsidence claims against a government entity arising from the presence of coal workings.  In addition to his experience as an advocate,  Stephen has served as a specialist Recorder in the TCC and is qualified as an arbitrator and as a mediator.
