Overview

Old Square Chambers' Personal Injury Group has an outstanding reputation throughout the UK. The Group comprises over half of Chambers, and includes 6 Queen's Counsel.

Nature of work

Members of the Group undertake all aspects of this wide-ranging and complex field, including the commonly litigated areas of:
  • employer's liability
  • road traffic accidents
  • occupier's liability
  • Highways Act claims
  • fatal accidents
The Personal Injury Group is regularly instructed in high value head, brain and spinal injury cases. Old Square Chambers has acted in a large number of high value claims involving ex service personnel.

We also cover more specialised areas such as industrial disease litigation, claims under the package holiday regulations, forum non conveniens and child abuse claims.

The Personal Injury Group has particular expertise in disaster litigation and multi-party actions. Members of the Group have been involved in some of the most complex cases of recent years including the largest ever multiple party claim, the Vibration White Finger Group Litigation ("the British Coal Litigation") – involving around 130,000 claimants and total compensation payments in excess of £1.5 billion thus far – and the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Industrial Deafness Litigation.

Old Square Chambers has a strong practice in professional negligence arising out of personal injury claims.
In addition, the Personal Injury Group has expertise in advising on costs, CFAs, structured settlements and periodical payments.

Additional expertise

Members of the Group are active as committee members of the Personal Injury Bar Association, and the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and the Bar Council's CFA panel.

The 2006 edition of Munkman on Employer's Liability was edited and contributed to by 12 members of the Group. In addition, the Personal Injury Group produces a regular newsletter featuring articles by members on recent developments in the law.
